Weather Explained!
What is a Heatwave?

What is a heatwave?

With high pressure bringing extreme temperatures over us, some areas could be in for a heatwave this summer. What exactly is a heatwave?

Basically, a heatwave is a number of days of hot weather over a certain temperature threshold.

You have to meet a certain heatwave threshold and it has to last for a certain period of time to be called a heatwave.

In order to qualify as a heatwave, the highest temperature must be at least 40 degrees Celsius and be 4.5 degrees above average for the given area, region, or city.

Over the next 2 days, maximum temperatures (day temperatures) are likely to rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius in many districts in Odisha, thus qualifying as a heatwave condition in the state.
