Clouds as Messengers of Love
The Legacy of Meghaduta in our Times

A cloud upon highway in India

Do you often gaze at the sky and wonder about the distance a cloud can traverse? What if a cloud could take a message from you and bring it to your loved ones? In our fast times of digital connectivity this sounds like nothing, but a romantic musing from the past.

The great Sanskrit scholar, dramatist and poet Kalidasa immortalized the cloud as a messenger in his classic love poem "Meghaduta". It narrated the story of a Yaksha who is separated from his beloved and enlists the help of a cloud to send a message to her in Alakapuri, their home in the Himalayas. He persuades the cloud by describing the mountains, rivers, and forests of northern India.
