One look at today's temperature in Srinagar or Anantnag and you know winter has arrived in Kashmir! Do you know how Kashmiris have traditionally coped with harsh temperatures?

We think of Kashmir and imagine snow-capped mountains, pheran and chinar trees. Tourists visit these scenic places for a short trip, but the locals are well familiarized with the severity of weather and have been learning to live with it for generations.

Let's have a look at a few ways of how they do it!

Kangri: Kashmiris keep a small portable fire-pot in their pheran or keep it near them to stay warm. It is mostly earthenware filled with glowing embers. However it is the the skillfully made wicker basket which makes a kangri look very cozy.

Traditional handwoven carpets: Kashmiri carpets are highly valued across the globe. They are made of pure wool or silk and are knotted. The quality of Kashmiri rugs is exceptional and immediately provides a unique winterly ambience.

Kahwa: who has not heard of this spicy Kashmiri tea with saffron, cardamom and cinnamon? All the ingredients in the traditional kahwa are meant to keep you warm from inside!
