First Heat Wave Day
Delhi Sizzles at 45.1°C

Heat on the rise in Delhi. Temperatures reached 45.1°C. Temperatures on the radar at 44°C

Delhi has officially entered the 45°C club after Safdarjung, the city’s base observatory, recorded a scorching maximum temperature of 45.1°C on 19 May, the highest of the season so far and nearly 4.7°C above normal.

Several other stations, including Mungeshpur and Ridge, crossed the 46°C mark, intensifying discomfort across Delhi/NCR.

Weather systems over North Pakistan, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab and the foothills of Uttarakhand are currently positioned too far north to provide relief to Delhi.

As a result, intense heat wave conditions are expected to persist through the week. Day temperatures are likely to hover around 45°C for the next three days and may even touch 46°C in isolated areas.

Some cloud development and isolated thundercloud activity may occur on 22 and 23 May due to a slight southward shift of the east-west trough.

Past records?

Delhi has crossed the 45°C mark in almost every alternate year since 2018, while the city’s highest temperature in the last 15 years remains 46.8°C, recorded in May 2024.

However, no significant drop in temperatures is expected. The ongoing scorching spell could spill into next week as well.
