Monsoon Forecast for Farmers I Delayed Onset of Rains Expected in 2024 in 7 regions

This year, for the first time ever, Professor Surovyatkina is predicting the arrival of monsoon rains in seven different regions of India. This is a significant step forward, built on eight years of successful monsoon forecasting in Central India.

The forecast anticipates a delay in the monsoon for Telangana, Central India, and particularly Delhi. This is due to cooler than usual temperatures observed in these regions from March to April.

As a result, the monsoon is expected to arrive by the end of June, potentially accompanied by a dry spell.

Dr. Elena Surovyatkina, a theoretical physicist at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, studies complex systems like monsoons.

Her expertise in critical phenomena allows her to predict monsoon onsets 40 days in advance and withdrawals 70 days early - a remarkable feat due to the monsoon system's complexity.

Since 2016, Dr. Surovyatkina has been sharing her monsoon forecasts through her "Monsoon Page" and on Weather & Radar India. Her recent research helps us understand unexpected droughts after the initial rainfall, allowing for better local climate adaptation strategies in India.
