The Northeast monsoon in India kicked off quietly on October 21st this year, but it hasn't quite delivered the expected rainfall, especially along the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu.

While there's been a recent uptick in weather activity, those heavy downpours we all associate with monsoon season are still playing hard to get.

The somewhat active monsoon conditions in the South Peninsula are on the decline, and we're looking at a quieter period ahead in about three days.

Now, let's talk about why this year's monsoon has been a bit shy. To officially announce the start of the Northeast monsoon, a checklist of conditions needs to be met. This includes:

  • the withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon
  • the presence of persistent easterly winds along the Tamil Nadu coast
  • widespread rainfall in specific areas

Normally, the Northeast monsoon starts around October 22nd, but this year, it decided to be fashionably late. Interestingly, there isn't a straightforward connection between when the monsoon begins, how long it lasts, and how much rainfall we get.

But here's the good news: there's still hope for some rain! A weather system near Sri Lanka has been causing more weather activity recently. However, as we look ahead, the intensity and coverage of the rain are expected to decrease in the coming days.

While this will help make up for some of the rainfall deficit in the core Northeast monsoon regions, it might not completely make amends for the overall lack of rain this season. So, stay tuned for what Mother Nature has in store!
