The pre-monsoon rains are often accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and squalling winds.

These rains provide us with relief from scorching heat, but play a much more important role in agriculture. This is how they got such different names depending on the dominating crop of a certain part of the country.

  • Mango showers: in Karnataka, Kerala, Konkan, and Goa the rains help in the ripening of mangos
  • Northwestern/Kalbaishakhi/Bordoisila: in West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha the showers are useful for jute, tea, and rice cultivation.
  • Cherry Blossom or Coffee showers in Karnataka and Kerala where coffee is cultivated. The coffee flowers bloom during the pre-monsoon months. Chikmagaluru, Hassan, and Wayanad are among the well-known robusta-growing regions of India.

Send us your images of the first rains or mangos in your hometown! You can simply upload it here and don't forget to indicate your name and location!
