Relentless Rains Batter Chennai City on Red Alert

Heavy rain in Chennai

Chennai has been hit by extremely heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours, with non-stop downpours, thunderstorms and strong winds disrupting normal life.

The Nungambakkam observatory recorded over 172 mm of rain, the highest this season, while Meenambakkam logged 90 mm.

A red alert has been issued for the next 24 hours, and all schools and colleges remain closed.

Flight operations saw partial disruption, with six flights cancelled. Waterlogging has affected several areas, especially low-lying pockets.

Storm surge linked to the depression is amplifying waves along the coast during high tide.

Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram face the highest risk, though rainfall is expected to ease gradually after 12–24 hours.
