Severe Winter Spell Grips North India

Temperatures in Northern parts dipping to single digits

Bad weather conditions have hit both the plains and hills of North together as cold wave, dense fog, and snowfall, rainfall unfolded from New Year’s Eve into early January 2026.

The Kashmir Valley recorded heavy snowfall, especially over higher reaches, while Poonch district faced snowstorms and blizzard-like conditions, intensifying the harsh Chillai Kalan period.

Snowfall was also reported from Lahaul–Spiti, covering Koksar, Rohtang, Atal Tunnel and nearby areas.

Plains of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh received the season’s first winter showers.

Although rainfall has ceased, severe cold, dense fog and icy winds are expected to disrupt daily life and transport in the coming days.
