A strong earthquake shook western Turkey on Sunday evening. The quake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale, had its epicentre in the province of Balikesir. At least one person was killed, 29 were injured and 16 houses collapsed.

Did you know?

There are numerous fault lines in Turkey. The metropolis of Istanbul, with its millions of inhabitants, is particularly prone to earthquakes.

The main quake was even felt in the cities of Istanbul and Izmir, more than 200 kilometres away. It was followed by over 230 aftershocks.

Many people therefore spent the night outdoors. The population remains fearful of further tremors.
