Unique Indian Christmas Traditions

Christmas celebrations in India are just as diverse as our country! Festive customs, food, language of the Christmas mass and carols - all depends on the region and the community. And of course there are things which only happen in India on this day. Here is our pick:

  • Christmas lanterns and mistletoe: You probably won't find a Christian house not decorated with giant paper lanterns, in the shape of stars! People also adhere to the centuries-old tradition of hanging the mistletoe in the house. They firmly believe that doing so will invite good fortune into the house and ward off any malefic spirit.
  • Traditional sweets: Kulkuls or sweet curls are a part and parcel of Indian Christmas celebrations. Many families insist on rolling, frying and coating these delicacies in sugar together as a great festival preparation. Guava cheese, plum cake, neuries, dodol and Bebinca deserve a special mention too!

  • Mix of native and Christian traditions: In many parts of India diyas are lit just like on Diwali. Many still use mango garlands and mango leaves for decorations and prepare traditional dishes like zan (Arunachal Pradesh) or kaukswe (Mizoram).
