Pre-monsoon showers are yet to commence over Southern and Central India, but the longing for the rains has already started. It has been exacerbated by the early onset of heat in the first weeks of March.

We associate mango showers or early rains with hope and freshness and look forward to each wet spell! Our art is also abundant with this longing for the rains. We bring you a few examples from various artistic fields.

  • Evergreen movie: You surely remember this skillfully created movie with a myriad of emotions and brilliant music. Lagaan is said to reflect the sentiments of the majority in our farming community in respect to the monsoon.

  • Kalidasa's Meghdutam or The Cloud Messenger: The epic lyric poem by one of the greatest Sanskrit poets describes how a yakṣa, who had been banished by his master to a remote region for a year, asked a passing monsoon cloud to take a message of love to his wife.
