Assam is once again facing widespread flooding after days of heavy monsoon rain, with fresh rainfall expected to keep river levels high.

There is possibility of more rain over parts of the Northeast, increasing the risk of flooding and waterlogging.

The Brahmaputra River and its many tributaries swell rapidly during the monsoon as intense rainfall occurs over Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Bhutan and nearby Himalayan regions.

The steep terrain sends huge volumes of water downstream within a short time. High sediment loads reduce the rivers' carrying capacity, causing them to overflow more easily.

With more rain likely this week, flood conditions may persist across several low-lying areas of Assam.
