Gir National Park is home to Asiatic LionsGir National Park is home to Asiatic Lions

Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Sasan Gir is one of the best places for nature lovers not only in Gujarat, but in the entire country! And the time is now. February and March are the best months to visit it, since the weather is pleasant and trip will not exhaust you. Have a look at the Weather Forecast for the next 14 days on our WeatherRadar.

Once almost extinct due to excessive hunting, the Asiatic lion population has been increasing in the protected area of Gir. Now, this wildlife sanctuary is the only place in the world, besides Africa, where one can spot lions roaming freely in the wild. Apart from lions, Gir is also home to a great number of deers, jackals, birds and reptiles like Marsh Crocodile or King Cobra.

Gir is closed from 16th June to 15th October every year and is guarded by dedicated forest stuff, especially the female van raksha sahayak or 'The Cat Women of Gir Forest'.

These women not only do the counting, but also watch out for poachers, illegal felling of teak trees or fires. The forest is extremely precious and a lot of efforts are required to preserve it. Let’s enjoy the nature without causing it harm or damaging it!
