The harsh winter period, Chillai-Kalan, has gripped Kashmir Valley with severe cold.

Srinagar recently recorded its coldest December night in 30 years at -8.5°C, with temperatures dropping as low as -7°C for a week.

Dal Lake has frozen, and heavy snow earlier disrupted flights and traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar highway, though conditions have improved temporarily.

Chillai-Kalan, lasting from December 21 to January 31, brings freezing water bodies and regular snowfall.
