La Niña Patterns Strengthen

Winter season in India likely to be intense in 2025

Sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies across the Pacific are once again signalling the onset of La Niña, shaping global weather patterns.

Scientists note that November 2025 displayed distinctly cooler SSTs, similar to last year’s brief La Niña phase.

Historical trends show a clear switch between warm El Niño years and the triple-dip La Niña of 2020–22.

This season, La Niña is expected to be mild and short-lived but strong enough to influence India’s winter.

North India may see sharper cold as westerly winds strengthen, though the impact will depend on western disturbances interacting with Himalayan terrain.

Meanwhile, the negative Indian Ocean Dipole is weakening, and the MJO remains inactive, offering little support for regional rainfall.
