Smallholder farmers, who face food insecurity themselves, produce a third of the world's food. Predicting the monsoon's arrival and departure is crucial for Indian agriculture, which heavily relies on these seasonal rains.

Professor Elena Surovyatkina, a physicist from Russia, has proposed a new method using physics instead of traditional weather models. This method can predict the monsoon onset 40 days and withdrawal 70 days in advance, with successful testing since 2016.

This new method can significantly benefit Indian farmers.

By predicting monsoon seasons in advance, farmers can plan their planting and irrigation, potentially increasing yields and reducing food prices.

Early warnings can also help mitigate risks from extreme weather events like floods and droughts. This method can contribute to a more sustainable agricultural system by helping farmers adapt to changing weather patterns.

Professor Surovyatkina emphasizes the need for reliable forecasts to help farmers plan and improve their livelihoods. Her method offers crucial information for decision-making across all levels, from individual farmers to the government.
