Why did it happen?
Record Breaking Rain in May

In an enlightening discussion with Weather & Radar India, Dr. Elena Surovyatkina, a leading climate scientist with dual doctorates, shed light on how early rainfall along India’s west coast in May set records in 2025.

She signaled the start of rain along the west coast on May 20. A strong weather system over the South Atlantic, powered by intense winds from Antarctica, set off a chain of events that led to the rainfall.

This led to an accelerated monsoon current reaching India’s west coast. This led to very heavy rainfall in Maharashtra by May 22.

Dr. Surovyatkina found a rare connection between Antarctic winds and the Indian monsoon. She informed the India Meteorological Department in Pune and shared her discovery.

The coastal rains mark a shift in atmospheric patterns, especially in central India, offering essential lead time for farmers to plan sowing and harvest.

Through her platform Monselena, Dr. Surovyatkina provides state specific forecasts that are transforming traditional agricultural cycles with scientific precision.
