What Exactly Happened?
Devastating Sikkim Disaster

Sikkim Disaster

In a tragic incident in the far northeast of India, a massive flash flood wreaked havoc this week, claiming the lives of many and leaving over 100 people still missing.

Among the victims are numerous army personnel. This catastrophe was triggered by the rupture of a glacial lake in the Himalayas, specifically in the vicinity of the Lhonak glacial lake.

The disaster unfolded rapidly, propelled by heavy rainfall near the lake. Within minutes, the glacial lake swelled significantly, causing the surrounding ice and rock masses to give way. The resulting deluge poured into the Tista River, eventually overwhelming a downstream dam.

What made this flash flood particularly chilling was the frigid temperature of the water, as a substantial portion originated from the glacial lake, while the rain fell at an altitude of approximately 5000 meters.

This disaster led to the collapse of at least 14 major bridges, impeding rescue operations and isolating remote areas.

Scientists have been closely monitoring Lake Lhonak for more than a decade, identifying it as one of the region's fastest-swelling glacial lakes.

Authorities have been alerted to the potential for further devastation downstream should the lake erupt. However, for now, only pipes have been installed to drain its water.

This tragedy underscores the escalating threat posed by rising glacial lakes, exacerbated by global warming and heavy rainfall. Worldwide, 15 million people reside near glacial lakes, with a significant concentration in India, Pakistan, Peru, and China.
