Breakfast Brief
Northeast, Florida soakers

A fresh week kicks off with New England getting soaked and Florida dealing with a deluge even as preparations get underway. A mix of summer and autumn temperatures will be found nationally.

The WeatherRadar shows heavy rain soaking the Northeast and parts of the eastern Great Lakes while downpours and thunderstorms swamping most of Florida. Bountiful sunshine is found across the rest of the U.S.

On this day

Eight tornadoes hit northern Arizona, causing damage near Flagstaff. This was the most tornadoes to occur in a single day in Arizona.

The driver for Florida's downpours is a stationary front tapping Gulf of Mexico moisture. This combination will produce heavy rain that could produce inches of rain throughout Florida, increasing the risk of localized flooding for Orlando, Miami, Tampa and Jacksonville.

Not as much rain will fall in Boston and New England, but it will still be a Monday autumn washout with temperatures only in the 60s.

Monday's highs.

The TemperatureRadar shows most of the U.S. having another late-summer-like day. The northern tier will be in the 70s while many places from southern California to the Southeast will be in the 80s. Houston, Dallas and San Antonio will be in the 90s while the Southwest will be in the triple digits.

Tropical update:

The tropical focus remains in the Gulf of Mexico. Major Hurricane Milton is intensifying over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. This system is heading towards Florida's Gulf Coast over the next several days and it will slam the state with destructive storm surge, damaging winds and inland flood. This will need to be watched over the next several days.

Kirk is transitioning from a tropical system into strong north Atlantic system today. It will become a windy threat to western Europe later this week. Hurricane Leslie is moving northwestward over the central Atlantic, remaining far from land.
