Typhoon CHAMPI is approaching Taiwan, bringing the threat of strong winds, heavy rainfall and dangerous sea conditions. Although the storm is weakening slightly and is expected to pass close to the island, severe weather remains a concern.

Wind gusts could reach 200 km/h, with waves rising up to 8 metres along Taiwan’s north-east coast. Several flights have already been cancelled, while coastal regions of China are preparing for the storm.

North-eastern Taiwan could receive up to 500 mm of rainfall within a few hours, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides.

CHAMPI is expected to move north-east and weaken further. However, its remnants could still bring heavy rainfall to parts of Japan in the coming days.
