What is Zero-Budget Natural Farming?

Marathi farmersZero-Budget Natural Farming brings a lot of benefits to the farmers

Is there a sustainable way of feeding our population without harming and degrading the soil? In one of his interviews, Maharashtrian agriculturist and Padma Shri recipient Subhash Palekar, also called as “Krishi ka Rishi” says, that by utilizing whatever is readily available in the nature one can grow a healthy and nutritious crop.

He popularized it as Zero-budget natural farming (ZBNF). It is a way of practicing agriculture in harmony with nature.

What are some characteristics of ZBNF?

  • Local Indian seeds instead of conventional/GM seeds. They are not sterile and can be stored and used for next crops.
  • Mixed cropping and cultivation of diverse species to prevent monoculture crops and crop failures.
  • Mulching with fallen leaves and producing natural fertilizers from cow dung, lemon juice, cow urine and other organic residues to return the soil what it has given to the plants and promote humus formation and water retention.

As a result, ZBNF requires fewer investments, frees farmers from debt, improves soil quality and help in producing heathy crops ! Do you do this form of farming or know somebody who does it? Share your stories with us on our social media pages!
