India faces intense heatwaves, especially between March and June, which can be dangerous and even deadly. In 2024, the election season coincides with the most intense heat.

This year, the heat is expected to be worse due to El Niño, a climate phenomenon.

To stay safe during the elections:

  • Follow weather forecasts: Watch for heatwave warnings on Weather & Radar app and from your local authorities.
  • Stay hydrated: Carry water and drink frequently, even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • Seek shade: Avoid long periods outdoors, especially during peak heat hours (11 am to 4 pm).
  • Wear loose, light-colored clothing: Cover your head and wear sunglasses.
  • Prioritize health: If you experience dizziness, nausea, or other heat-related illness, seek medical attention immediately.

Election authorities should also take steps to protect voters:

  • Set up shaded waiting areas, hydration stations, and cooling centers near polling booths.
  • Offer flexible voting hours in areas experiencing heatwaves.
  • Ensure polling booths have access to water, shade, and toilets.
  • Consider implementing secure e-voting options in the future.

By taking these precautions, we can ensure safe and healthy elections for everyone. Remember, your vote is important, but your health is even more so.
