Indian Weather Explained
Why Does It Get Foggy in Winters?

Fog is a regular occurrence in the winters, especially in Northern India. Cooler temperatures usually bring a higher chance for the fog to develop. But how does it form?

With a visibility of less than 1 kilometer, fog is a cloud on the ground. Fog often occurs in the mornings between late October and early February when the sun still shines during the day, but temperatures drop significantly overnight.

During cooler months, the sun evaporates water from morning dew, lakes, and rivers producing “invisible” water vapor. At night-time, the air cools quickly causing water vapor to turn back into water droplets. These droplets then gather atmospheric dust and soot particles which makes the water droplets visible creating fog.

The occurrence of fog is intrinsically linked to a temperature change. The larger the temperature change, the denser the fog. Watch our weather explained video above to learn more.
