Mumbai Ends August With 45% Rain Deficit

Mumbai city likely to end August on a rain deficit

Mumbai ended August with significantly below-normal monsoon rainfall, and subdued conditions are likely to continue into early September.

Santacruz recorded 308.1 mm of rain during August against the monthly normal of 560.8 mm, leaving a deficit of over 45%. Between August 20 and 31, just 26 mm was recorded.

The current Bay of Bengal low-pressure system is unlikely to move far enough west to strengthen the monsoon over Mumbai. The offshore trough also remains weak, while Arabian Sea winds are only mild to moderate.
