Pune Swelters at 42.7°C

Temperatures rise in the city of Pune leading to heatwave like conditions

Pune reeled under intense heat as Lohegaon airport recorded a scorching maximum temperature of 42.7°C yesterday, which was 4.7°C above normal and qualified as heat wave conditions across the city and suburbs.

Other observatories also crossed the 40°C mark. Shivajinagar logged 41.4°C, surpassing its earliest 2019 record of 41.3°C. However, Pune’s all-time highest temperature remains 43.3°C, recorded on April 30, 1897.

Pune normally records an average maximum of 37.3°C in May, but temperatures have remained above normal for the last five days. The city has also witnessed a completely dry spell this month against the normal rainfall of 19.8 mm.

Hot and dry northerly winds from Rajasthan and Gujarat continue to sweep across Madhya Maharashtra. Jalgaon airport remained the hottest in the region at 44.5°C.

Pune is expected to stay around 42°C today as well, with dry and hot weather likely till the weekend. Light rain activity may begin early next week.
