Mammatus Clouds
Like You've Never Seen Them Before

A dazzling display of mammatus clouds after a supercell thunderstorm brought baseball-size hail to a small town in the American state of Oklahoma.

Severe thunderstorms swept across the region on Sunday, May 15, with over 200 storm reports of destructive hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes. However, once the storms settled, the sky filled with mammatus clouds.

Derived from the Latin word mamma, meaning udder or breast, these clouds form as warm saturated air sinks around the periphery of an intense thunderstorm. Learn more about these spectacular cloud formations here.
