Rain Check: Monsoon Withdrawal Forecast

Early rains withdrawal forecast can help farmers plan their harvestEarly rains withdrawal forecast can help farmers plan their harvest

Professor Elena Surovyatkina issues a unique forecast about when the monsoon will come to an end.

This year, it's given 40 days in advance. Currently, no other agency provides such a forecast due to a lack of methodology.

Unlocking the Monsoon Mystery: Your Early Harvest Guide

October is the time to gather crops as the monsoon ends. Farmers really need to know when this will happen so they can decide when to harvest.

This makes it very important for farmers to get good and quick information about the monsoon.

Northwest India & Delhi

In 2023, the Southwest Monsoon is expected to end in Northwest India and Delhi between September 30 and October 9.

Central India

The monsoon will not stop suddenly in the Eastern Ghats. Rain will start to become less in early October, but the last rainy time might be from October 7 to 17.

Around the middle of October, the Northeast Monsoon might come and bring rain to the Eastern Ghats until November.

Northern Telangana

The Southwest Monsoon will withdraw from Northern Telangana in the period from October 10 to 20. Northern Telangana also may also experience rainfall from the Northeast Monsoon.

Why the 40-day Forecast Matters?

In a warming world, severe storms and floods during monsoon withdrawal are becoming more frequent.

Such a long-term forecast 40 days in advance could help the farmers and the Government plan strategically, consolidate resources, and strengthen the capacity to respond effectively to disasters.

Professor Surovyatkina hopes farmers and the Government will listen to the forecast.

She wants them to take measures to make dams ready so that they don't fill up too much and cause floods in October.
