Holi is celebrated across India on the full moon day in the month of Phalgun, which falls on March 13/14th this year.

We all know, that it signifies the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. But Holi is more than just fun; it has a scientific side too!

Science of Holi

Seasonal Changes and Health: Holi coincides with the transition from winter to summer. Traditionally, people didn't bathe regularly during winter, making them prone to skin issues.

Holi colors, often made from natural ingredients like turmeric, helped cleanse the body and remove unwanted particles.

Holi is incomplete without...

Gujiya, dahi bhalle, thandai, malpua and bhang!

Holika Dahan: Burning Holika on the eve of Holi eliminates germs and bacteria in the surroundings. Walking around the bonfire (Parikrama) exposes the body to heat, further aiding cleansing.

Combating Seasonal Tardiness: The change in season can make people sluggish. Singing and playing with vibrant colors during Holi, along with the music and movement, help rejuvenate the body.

Embrace Natural Colors

Traditionally, Holi colors were derived from nature (turmeric, indigo, rose petals, mehendi) and were safe for the skin. While readily available nowadays, synthetic colors are harmful.

They contain toxic substances like lead and mercury, causing skin allergies, irritation, and even vision problems.

Tips for a Safe Holi

  • Apply moisturizer, oil, or coconut oil on exposed skin.
  • Oil your hair and scalp with olive or coconut oil.
  • Wear light-colored, full-sleeved cotton clothes.
  • Protect your eyes with sunglasses and avoid wearing lenses.
  • Drink plenty of water before, during, and after playing Holi.
  • Be careful with bhang and pay attention to your health!

Celebrate Holi with the spirit of joy and embrace the science behind it for a healthy and colorful experience! Holi hai!
