Heatwave Alert
Why is it so Hot in Mumbai?

Mumbai is currently experiencing an unexpected heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 38.4°C, the highest for this month in five years.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri on February 25 and 26, anticipating temperatures between 37°C and 38°C.

Why is it so hot?

The unusual heat is due to delayed sea breezes and strong easterly winds, causing temperatures to rise above normal.

How to Stay Safe During the Heatwave

Here are some simple tips to protect yourself and your loved ones:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, even if you're not thirsty. Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, and sugary drinks as they can dehydrate you.
  2. Wear Appropriate Clothing: Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting cotton clothes. Use a hat or umbrella when outdoors.
  3. Avoid Peak Sun Hours: Stay indoors, especially between 12 noon and 3 p.m., when the sun is strongest.
  4. Plan Outdoor Activities Carefully: If you need to be outside, do so in the early morning or late evening. Take frequent breaks in the shade.
  5. Use Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from sunburn.
  6. Keep Your Home Cool: Use fans, keep windows open for cross-ventilation, and take cool showers to lower body temperature.
  7. Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Ensure children, the elderly, and those with health conditions are staying cool and hydrated.

By following these precautions, you can reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses during this unexpected heatwave.
