Meteorology has undergone significant changes with the introduction of advanced technology, and it continues to evolve with the use of machine learning and supercomputers.

The main challenge is to understand the physical processes and adapt to the latest technological advancements.

What do you need to become a meteorologist in India?

  • Curiosity for weather patterns, climate and genuine interest in geography and physics. This is a job you can not do without your heart in it!
  • Strong analytical skills, patience and accuracy
  • BTech/MTech/BSc/MSc in atmospheric sciences or meteorology. You can also study Physics or Oceanography
  • There are multiple opportunities for Ph.D programs in meteorology both in India and abroad

Where can you work as a meteorologist?

  • Many government organizations such as ISRO, DRDO or IMD look for highly qualified meteorologists
  • One can pursue the academic path and work as a lecturer or scientist in both government or private research centers
  • Agricultural sector is in dire need of qualified people who can understand the changing climate patterns and help Indian farmers adjust to new realities
