Monsoon 2026 Ends With 13% Rain Deficit

Drought like conditions expected in India

Southwest Monsoon 2026 has officially ended with a 13% seasonal rainfall deficit, placing the season in the mild drought category.

It marks the country’s first monsoon drought since 2015. The season began poorly, with June recording a 35% rainfall deficit amid an uneven monsoon onset and fewer weather systems.

Rainfall improved significantly in July, but prolonged monsoon breaks during August again increased the nationwide shortfall.

Heavy rain during late September helped reduce the deficit, but it was not enough to offset the earlier losses.

El Niño, which strengthened considerably during August and September, remained an important influence on the season. Nearly half of India’s area remained rain-deficient, while other regions recorded normal to above-normal rainfall.
