Hurricane Helene
Florida, USA on High Alert

Tropical Storm Helene, currently in the Caribbean, is intensifying and expected to become a major hurricane as it moves north towards Florida this week.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center has warned of life-threatening storm surges of up to 20 feet along Florida's Big Bend coast.

Helene’s size, with effects extending 320 kilometers from its center, could cause widespread devastation.

Florida’s west coast is particularly vulnerable, with hurricane-force winds, torrential rains, and storm surges predicted to wreak havoc.

Some areas may experience over 300 mm of rainfall, leading to severe flooding.

Hurricanes vs Cyclones

India experiences cyclones, the U.S. faces hurricanes—different names for the same phenomenon depending on location. They are called "hurricanes" in the Atlantic and "cyclones" in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific.

India’s coastal regions, like Odisha and West Bengal, have witnessed similar devastation with cyclones like Amphan in 2020.

However, the current threat in Florida reminds us of the global impact of tropical storms and the importance of preparedness.

With Florida bracing for one of its most dangerous hurricanes, the potential cost in lives and damage could be unprecedented.
